One of Monaghan’s biggest projects in 2013 is the construction of a 4.5km walk/cycle path along the disused tow path of the Ulster Canal.

You will find below a set of maps for the Greenway, outlining the route to be taken.

There are 10 maps in all:

Map 0 is a master map which shows the full project from the Armagh Road to the Clones Road, and shows you the numbers of the maps for each section along the route  Map 0

Map 1 covers: Roundabout at Armagh Rd Map 1

Map 3 covers: The canal stretch along the grounds of St Davnets Map 3

Map 4 covers: The canal stretch past Monaghan Harps GFC grounds and on towards Old Cross Square Map 4

Biodiversity

As well as developing the tow path for walking and cycling, we are conscious of the wonderful and varied  habitat the Canal and environs provide, and that these have lain largely undisturbed for over seventy years.  To safeguard these habitats and ensure that we follow best practice in the design and construction of the Greenway, we set up a Biodiversity Steering Committee, who advised us on how to approach the project with the protection and promotion of wildlife in mind.

The Greenway includes viewing points and information stands about the various habitats, what we have done to enhance them, and how you can re-create this work in your own back garden.  There will also be two outdoor classrooms, to encourage local schools to get out and explore.
